Internships

Internships provide students with the opportunity to link their academic work with practical experience in a variety of career fields. All students participate in at least one internship through the Salem Signature program. In addition, several academic programs at Salem require internships as an integral part of the student’s program of study. Students may take internships during the regular term as well as during the January Term.

Stacey Griffin – Honduras
Journal Entry: 7 January
honduras.jpg (8903 bytes)This morning, Haeyoung, Sookyoung, two Korean journalists, and I went to a refugee camp. It was sad! The people told me stories of losing their homes by Hurricane Mitch and their family that died. I also met a mother and her baby, Luiz, today. She spoke to me for twenty minutes. We took a picture together.

Journal Entry: 16 January
We worked at the invasion (refugee camp) from 12 noon to 5:30. I helped Haeyoung in the pharmacy. Each person had a card with the diagnosis and medicines needed. I put the medicine in a little bag and then Haeyoung explained how to take the medications. I could explain the acetaminophines and vitamins. Luiz and his mother visited the clinic today. She remembered my name. I was surprised and moved.

Anabella Torres – Eberbach, Germany
surgery.jpg (7329 bytes)As a pre-med senior, Anabella decided to fulfill German credit hours by spending January Term with Dr. Klaus Diegritz, a German gynecologist in Eberbach, Germany. She had hands-on opportunities in assisting Dr. Diegritz in patient C-sections. As part of Anabella’s course requirements, she journaled daily (in German) and wrote a paper contrasting the German and American Healthcare systems. "I observed first hand the government-based German healthcare system and its focus on prevention versus the treatment at hand." In the fall, Anabella will begin medical school at the University of Miami.

Mimi Aledo– Cape Canaveral, Florida
nasa.jpg (8216 bytes)During the summer of 1999 I participated in the Space Life Science Training Program (SLSTP) at NASA Space Center. The program emphasized the unique features of experiments conducted in the space flight environment and the challenges associated with planning and conducting long duration space flight missions and experiments. As a participant in SLSTP, I was able to design and manage a payload research experiment. While at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, I also had the opportunity to go inside Atlantis, one of the four shuttle orbiters.
