Biography:

Professor Hines-Gaither is from North Carolina. She first came to Salem as a student when a professor from her former college recommended she transfer to Salem to study Spanish. She loved it so much she decided to stay and become a professor.

To her, the strengths of a women’s college are that it empowers women, engages women in critical pedagogy and it offers them freedom to be who they are.

On campus she has been the advisor of BADU and InterVarsity for the past five years.

Professor Hines-Gaither’s research interests include Afro-Hispanic culture or the African history, influences, and contributions in and to Latin America. She has published an article in the ACTFL Foreign Language Educator titled, “Engaging African American Students in Language Study” as well as given countless conference presentations.

She believes there are many benefits for students choosing to study Spanish at Salem. Salem offers small classes, communicative language teaching, great internships locally and abroad, study abroad, and bilingual conversations with native speakers through an exchange at Forsyth Tech.

Her advice to students contemplating a Spanish degree is to take language classes consecutively and each semester, with no gaps in between. She encourages you to speak, speak speak! Keep practicing and study abroad.

Professor Hines-Gaither is married to her best friend, Julian. They have no pets but a house full of plants in every room. When she’s not working, she enjoys her book club which has become her therapy session. She also loves salsa dancing and community activism.
