Biography:

Dr. Rapp is originally from Chicago, Illinois. She moved to Winston-Salem after marrying her husband and chose to teach at Salem because she believes in its mission of educating women. Dr. Rapp is passionate about the opportunity to prepare women to compete effectively in a very competitive marketplace.

Dr. Rapp recognizes that at a women’s college, students have a voice. Students at Salem have the confidence to discuss ideas in class and, in addition, class sizes are smaller, which allow for more in-depth class discussions.

Since Dr. Rapp publishes research on experiential learning, it’s important for her to bring in experiential learning components into her upper level classes. This gives students the opportunity to combine concepts from their textbooks and readings with class projects that require them to make decisions in real-life situations.  For example, in the marketing research class, students conduct research about a technology company in Greensboro and at the end of the semester they provide this company with marketing strategies.

Dr. Rapp is actively involved in advising and mentoring her students. It is important to her that students start thinking about their future after college before their senior year, so she talks with them, at length, about how they should be positioning themselves to take that next step. Many of her students intern during Jan term and she is also involved with supervising these internships.

For students considering entering into marketing, she advises that marketing is used in every situation, including non-profit organizations, politics, public health/policy, and so on. Students mistakenly think marketing is only applicable if they’re thinking about working for a large corporation. Of course it’s imperative if they’re considering starting their own business, which more women are doing.  She also teaches students that there’s a right way of conducting business and living a life of integrity is important.
