Assistant Professor of Math
Winston-Salem , North Carolina 27101
- M.S., North Carolina State University
- B.S., Wake Forest University
Dr. Harrell is originally from Clinton, NC. She spent time teaching in Georgia but missed living in North Carolina so she took the opportunity to come back to her home state and began teaching at Salem.
Dr. Harrell loves to travel and she has travelled with Salem students to countries such as China, England, France, Switzerland, Austria, Germany and Italy. She also loves to travel independently and she has stayed in every state for at least one night, except Hawaii, (but Hawaii is on her list). Her last major trip was to New Zealand and Australia, where she rented a car and saw as much of each country as she could.
Dr. Harrell believes that the strength of a women’s college is that women get all the attention and in a math or science class that individual attention can make all the difference. Students who choose a major in the math department will learn how to think in a logical, problem-solving way. Once students have these skills they can go anywhere, whether it be law school, medical school, dental school, etc.
Dr. Harrell is involved with her students, she advises math majors and minors, she is the advisor of Omicron Delta Kappa, and she is a member of Faculty Advisory Board of the Honor Council. Her favorite courses to teach are differential equations, which is an extension of calculus, and she also enjoys the history of mathematics.
When not working, Dr. Harrell enjoys traveling and bicycling. Recently, she made a thirty-five mile trip on the Chesapeake and Ohio Towpath in Maryland.
