Biography:

Dr. Amy Knox Brown was born and raised in Lincoln, Nebraska, making her a fourth generation Nebraskan. As a graduate of a all woman's college, Dr. Brown was delighted to discover that Winston-Salem is the hometown of the oldest women's institution in the United States, and she began teaching at Salem in 2004. Before Salem, Dr. Brown taught English at a variety of schools including George Washington University, University of Nebraska at Lincoln, University of Nebraska at Omaha, Union College in Lincoln, and North Carolina State University.

At Salem College, Dr. Brown teaches a variety of creative writing courses. Besides teaching, she plays many roles on Salem's campus. She is the faculty adviser for Incunabula, the Director of the Center for Women Writers and Co-Director of the Pre-law Program. Outside of Salem, Dr. Brown has authored a short story collection, Three Versions of the Truth, which was a finalist for the 2008 Shenandoah/Glasgow Prize for Emerging Writers. She also has written a poetry book, Advice From the Household Gods.

Dr. Knox Brown loves animals! She and her husband have three dogs and seven cats. She enjoys spending a lot of time reading fiction and nonfiction.

Advice to prospective creative writing students: "You must love to read, be able to commit yourself to a writing schedule, and you have to learn how to accept criticism."
