Student Recitals
Student recitals are held regularly in Shirley Recital Hall in the Fine Arts Center. Students are encouraged to share their musical growth, support other students and practice the art of listening.
Community Music Recitals
Periodically, our students will perform outside of Salem College as an opportunity to provide music at various local venues.
Festivals
Festivals allow students to receive evaluation from other Salem College
Community Music School instructors or visiting musicians. Students perform
before judges and receive constructive feedback. Certificates are awarded
for participation.
Master Classes
Master Classes allow students to perform a piece and receive immediate constructive feedback in a public setting. Music instructors and other students are able to learn more about the music-making process through this unique learning experience.
Open Houses
Open Houses invite the community to see what we're all about. Students
have the opportunity to perform in this informal setting.
Placement Assessment
Prospective students have the option to have an individual meeting with a potential instructor. This is sometimes helpful for assessment purposes and to discuss teaching and learning philosophies.
Lesson Formats
Private Instruction
Individual Applied Lessons are the traditional format for many music
lessons. The individual attention each student receives allows for an
optimal learning environment each and every week. Students are able
to progress at their own individual level, and all effort is made to
accommodate different learning styles and preferences.
Duo and Trio Lessons
Salem College Community Music School is proud to offer this unique lesson format. It is particularly appealing for voice, band, and orchestral students already enrolled in a school music program. Students of a similar level are grouped together to learn chamber repertoire and acquire the skills and musicianship to become more proficient musicians. Lessons can be tailored to accommodate individual and ensemble goals. Talk to your teacher about this option.
Group Instruction:
The Group Class format is a great way to begin one's music-making
journey! Classes are small-4-8 students-so that the instructor can provide
both group and individual attention. Students enjoy working together
to create ensembles and are motivated by the group interaction that
occurs each week.

Music Theory Classes
These classes are for all instruments and develop the skills to understand
music more fully. Students meet 8 weeks, for 45 minutes, and explore
why music "works." Students will sometimes use our electronic
keyboard lab to learn basic patterns. At the final session, an evaluation
is made so that students may continue on to the next level. Class size
is limited to 10 students.
Applied instructors encourage all students to take at least 2
Music Theory classes each year. See your instructor to determine your
current level.
Keyboard Ensemble Classes
Up to 8 students meet together, once weekly, in our electronic keyboard
laboratory to create a keyboard "orchestra." 4 levels.
Adult Keyboard Classes
The Adult Group Keyboard Classes are structured into 8-week "mini-mesters"
because of the busy and changing schedules of most adults. Our facilities
accommodate up to 7 students, which allows for group and individual
attention each week. Most adults find that the group lesson format is
economical, fun and motivating! 4 Levels!
Please call 721-2636 for the days/ times of these classes.
