SNOW DAY!!!! Last week I had my first snow day on Tuesday and it was
awesome!! Some of the girls and I went sledding on the academy hill. It was perfect for my first snow day! And after sledding the girls and I had a Wii party in the basement of our dorm.

After all the fun, we finally resumed classes on Wednesday
which ended my five day weekend. (On Monday, unfortunately Dr. Foley
came down with a cold that had him trapped in his home, poor thing) In
class, we got to review another prospective professor before watching The Lives of Others. This professor is actually my favorite thus far. Although the first prospect was excellent, this professor was able to present to us her lesson
without her prepared PowerPoint and still do a very effective job. It really made me happy that she could possibly be working here because I've already learned, after my first semester, that the professor can make or break a course for you.

Back to the class, The Lives of Others has been my favorite movie in my film class. I won't explain it to you guys because you have to watch it, but it was an excellent film. You should all watch it! Other than that, this week was a relatively short week so there wasn't much to report. Until next time, Ciao!

My first week of Jan-Term classes have past and I'm very happy. In our first week, we watched three films, Lord of the Flies, 1984 and Fail Safe. After Lord of the Flies, I was really concerned about the subject matter of the films we would watch in class because, although I knew the class would be focused on politics, I didn't want it to be dry or boring. However, Dr. Foley really came through with films that were able to spark an interest among my classmates and I while staying relevant to the politics of film making. 1984 and Fail Safe exceeded my expectations of films that would be interesting while relevant and forced me to research the background of each of the films making me more knowledgeable about war eras in America and worldwide.

We also had our first review of one of the professors seeking a position as the head of our new Public Policy major. Being able to help in the selection process of a new faculty member really surprised me. Although the students spend the most time with new professors it never occurred to me that some schools actually allow students to review prospective professors. I liked this first prospect who taught us our first introduction to public policy.

When I realized that many students would be off campus during Jan-Term, I was concerned that there would be a lag in the events on campus. However, our director of student activities, Brooke Barber, has really gone out of her way to have activities open for on-campus students to participate in. So, over all, I'm pretty content. Until next entry, Ciao!

Hi! My name is Cassidy Carter. I'm from Houston, Texas and attended KIPP Houston High School. I came to Salem to major in International Relations and minor in French. I'm in the class of 2014 (woot woot!). For my first Jan-Term, I chose to take the Politics in Film class taught by Professor Foley. I chose it because my first semester I took my first course for my major, Intro to International Relations, which was an awesome class! Under Dr. Foley, I've received some good reviews from upperclassmen, so I'm pretty excited. I'll keep you guys posted on what goes on. :)

Today was my first day in class. Even though the class was disturbed by an evaluation of a potential future faculty member, (we got to evaluate a female professor applying for a position here at Salem!) it was overall a good introduction and overview to the subject matter of the course. After the evaluation, we discussed the first film the class will be viewing tomorrow called Lord of The Flies and went over some background of the movie. I'll be sure to remember to let you guys know how much I love the movie in my next entry, until then, Toodles. :)
