Angela Mojica

Angela Mojica

My name is Angela Mojica and I am a sophomore at Salem College planning to double major in Spanish and International Business. I was born and raised in Dallas, Texas.

This Jan Term, with the help of the Wachovia Scholarship, I will be traveling to Argentina. This two-week trip was designed to focus on the marketing and branding of Argentina through its business, art, food, wine and culture. Salem has given me multiple opportunities to study abroad including trips to Mexico and Greece. Having been on previous study abroad trips, I know the importance of learning new things about different cultures. With all the knowledge and insight that I have gained from these trips, I am very excited for what awaits me in Argentina. My hispanic background and fluency in Spanish will help me make the most of this trip as I explore another Hispanic culture. I have a very full schedule for the next two weeks but I wouldn't have it any other way.

Cassidy Carter

Hi! My name is Cassidy Carter. I'm from Houston, Texas and attended KIPP Houston High School. I came to Salem to major in International Relations and minor in French. I'm in the class of 2014 (woot woot!). For my first Jan-Term, I chose to take the Politics in Film class taught by Professor Foley. I chose it because my first semester I took my first course for my major, Intro to International Relations, which was an awesome class! Under Dr. Foley, I've received some good reviews from upperclassmen, so I'm pretty excited. I'll keep you guys posted on what goes on. :)

Desiree' Knight

Hi! My name is Desiree' Knight. I am a Junior from Rome, Georgia. I am a double Accounting and Economics major, with a College Honors minor.

Desiree' Knight

During the past two Jan Term sessions I have taken classes at Salem. However, this year, with the help of Professor Herb Schuette, I have designed my own independent study. I will be doing two things this month. First, I will be studying the Euro, with in-depth research in regards to the current Greek "tragedy" in the Eurozone and the Germany success within that same Eurozone. Second, I will be traveling to Prague, Czech Republic to spend seven days exploring the culture and history of the city  as well as looking at the emerging Eastern European economies.

This summer I spent four weeks studying Emerging Global Economics at Oxford University in England, UK. While there I was introduced to the topics I will be studying during Jan Term. By designing this independent study, I hope to learn more about  European economies and the newly-developing Euro.

I am very excited to begin my JanTerm experiences and am glad you all are joining me! Enjoy.

Until next week in Prague.

Jane Wetherholt

Jane Wetherholt Head ShotHello! My name is Jane Wetherholt. This Jan Term I will be taking a class at the Sawtooth Center focusing on photography. I will be using a single-lens reflex (SLR) film camera that belonged to my grandfather. He passed away in August, so it will be really special to be using something that belonged to him. I started becoming interested in photography in high school. I took a class my junior year of high school and my dad got a refurbished Canon SLR film camera, so I've had some experience with dark room photography. I wasn't very good at all, and I didn't really improve much that first year because there was a misunderstanding and I ended up almost teaching myself. However, I did learn a lot about the mechanics of an SLR and the mechanics of the dark room. My first year in college, my dad got me a digital SLR camera and it's been a learning process ever since. I've learned the most just taking pictures recreationally and learning what works and what doesn't. It's been really great to have the digital SLR because I can see immediately what works and what doesn't and really get a chance to experiment without wasting film. It may sound conceited, but I really think I've improved over the last few years and really firmed the basics of photography. The summer after my first year I also took a week-long photography course with a camera similar to the one I'll be using for this class. The course was extremely helpful in learning the basics of SLR film photography and dark room mechanics.

Though photography is one my hobbies and has been since high school, there are still several areas in which I need improvement. I'm not very good at taking pictures in low light or with a flash. I'd also like to learn more about taking pictures of people and landscapes. I think some of my framing definitely needs improvement and I could probably use more practice at finding patterns and focal points. Having a basic working knowledge of photography and SLR cameras will help me in this class because I can hone in on the areas that need improvement. I also want to find out if I've cultivated bad habits in taking pictures. It could be that I've got the basics completely wrong.

I've been meaning to take more photography courses, but I've never had time in my schedule, so this Jan Term is a perfect way to accomplish this. I'd also like to learn how to use my grandfather's camera, since I've been used to more modern cameras.

I'm very excited about this Jan Term! I'll also be posting the photographs I'll be taking and developing, since I just got a snazzy new printer for Christmas and can scan the photographs onto my computer.

I hope you enjoy reading this blog as much as I'll be enjoying making it!
