I somehow managed to read through all of
Hunchback of Notre Dame. To say the least, it's not the story with the happy ending that
Disney gave us when we were younger. Then again, they never once said
that their version was based entirely upon Victor Hugo's tale of
rebellion, love and woe. A happy ending is really nonexistent as bad
thing after bad thing happens, not just to Quasimodo but also to the
gypsy Esmeralda that he loves so much. Claude Frollo's obsession with
Esmeralda leads to a very large mess (that we can all relate back to
the Disney movie and the fires at Notre Dame). To say the least
(without giving too much away), it's definitely a tale of abandonment.
Friendships fall apart, lovers fall apart while the Notre Dame
cathedral looms in the distance, watching all, almost a metaphor for an
all-seeing deity if one wished to see it like that.
Well, next week's going to be interesting! Right now it's time to pack for the five-day trip to Paris!
