In the first week of my Jan term, "Young Women's Activism", I learned a lot! In the class we are reading two books, Listen Up!, which is an anthology of women's stories, and Manifesta by Jennifer Baumgardner and Amy Richards, who we are actually going to meet when we travel to NYC next week. Through the readings, class discussions, and lectures we've learned about why feminism is necessary, the history of feminism, the girl's movement, and body ideals and image. On Friday, we had a guest speaker from UNC-CH come and show a documentary she made about body image. It was really great to be able to see a film, and then ask questions of the actual maker and director of it.
Overall, I'm learning a lot and having a lot of fun doing it. The class is really laid back and we're having really fascinating and fun discussions about feminism in the world, America, and in our own lives. I like having this class over Jan term because there is a ton of reading and writing that might be stressful during the regular semester, but in this month-long period is just really interesting!
