My week started with an exciting trip to South Point mall on Saturday! Each day at the hospital, I am learning more about the health challenges faced by babies due to premature births. Besides my internship, I am also enjoying the interesting weather of Salem this week.
At the hospital, I got an opportunity to attend the rounds along with medical staff and different doctors, who were on duty that day. The doctors, nurses, medical staff and some medical students discussed the medical conditions of the patients in detail. I saw how they co-ordinate among each other, how they share ideas, how they deal with patients' parents, how they question each other and how they come to a solution with each other's suggestions.
I also attended a web conference that the journal club conducted with Forsyth Medical Centre. They discussed an article: "Prolonged Duration of Initial Empirical Antibiotic Treatment Is Associated with Increased Rates of Necrotizing Enterocolitis and Death for Extremely Low Birth Weight Infants." It was very interesting to see how critically they analyzed the article. Also, after going through several aspects of NICU, I decided to do my individual research on the topic "The role of environmental toxicants on premature births." I am studying several scholarly journals and books. I am also preparing for the presentation on my topic and looking for internships for the summer.
