Winston-Salem, NC- The Salem College volleyball team came in second place in the first Salem College Spirit Classic today. Salem ended the classic with a 3-1 record, improving their overall record to 13-19. Salem beat Sweet Briar, Crown, and Trinity, and lost to eventual champion, Pikeville. Katie Lineberger (Maiden, NC) and Christine Tillman (King, NC) were selected to the Spirit All-Classic Team. Hillary Mussman (Pikeville) was the Spirit Classic Most Valuable Player.

Salem started the morning losing to Pikeville (15-25, 18-25, 9-25). Lineberger led the team with 11 digs, 9 kills, and 1 ace. Sara Maher (Longmont, CO) led the team with 21 assists. Tillman led the team in blocks with 1.5. Khadija Layne (Dorcester, MA) had a strong match with 8 digs, 4 kills, and 1 ace.

The Spirits won a very exciting 5 game match versus Sweet Briar (14-25, 25-18, 25-23, 19-25, 15-8). Lineberger led the way with 26 digs and 15 kills. Maher again had the most assists with 40. Tillman had 12 digs, 15 kills, 2 aces, and 1.5 blocks. Stephanee Thibodeaux (Jacksonville, NC) provided 14 digs, 10 kills, 2 aces, and 1 block for the team. Latricia Maye (Vestavia Hills, AL) also had a strong day for the Spirits in all 4 matches.

Salem defeated Crown in three games (25-11, 25-15, 25-22). Jordan Edwards (King, NC) led the team with 15 digs. Maher had the most assists with 25. Lineberger had the most kills with 14, and Thibodeaux the most blocks with 1.5. Nicole Swinney (Woodlawn, VA) and Jamica Rice (Winston-Salem, NC) each had two aces.

Salem defeated Trinity in three games also (25-15, 25-14, 25-10). Lineberger led the team with 12 digs and 14 kills. Maher had 27 assists, 6 digs, and 3 kills. Tillman had a strong match with 9 digs, 14 kills, and 4 aces. Krystyna Martin (Brooklyn, NY) played her strongest match of the day with 5 digs.

The team will return to action on Tuesday, October 28th as they host Emory and Henry at 7:00.
