Track kicks off 2014 season in West Virginia

Charleston, WV-The Salem College track and field team started their 2014 season today at the University of Charleston Golden Eagle Invitational. The scored meet featured Salem, Charleston, Glenville St., and Concord. All three schools besides Salem are from West Virginia and compete in the NCAA Division II. Stephanie Verdi (High Point, NC) won the 10,000 meter run. Heather Huffman (Winston-Salem, NC) and Elizabeth Penley (Newport, NC) each scored in two different events.
In the throwing events, Penley finished in 4th in the shot put (7.98m) and 6th in the discus (24.03m). Huffman finished in 5th in the 100 meter (13.42) and 6th in the 200 meter (28.23). Victoria Chaffers (Deltona, FL) finished in 5th in the 800 meter (2:45.08) and Courtney Hedgecock (San Diego, CA) finished in 5th in the 1500 meter run (5:54.70). Verdi finished the 10,000 meter in 41:22.58. She was followed in 2nd place in the 10,000 meter run by Natali Olveda (Salinas, CA), who ran (43:15.87).
"This was a good start to the season," said Head Coach Jamie Williams. "Most of our runners are ahead of where they were last year in the first meet."
The Spirits return to the track in two weeks when they head to Myrtle Beach for the Coastal Carolina Invite.
