heatherhuffrunstrackWinston-Salem, NC-The Salem College track & field program had its most successful season in 2013. In the 3rd year of existence, the Spirits crushed most records from the previous two seasons. Heather Huffman (Winston-Salem, NC) and Sawyer Ferguson (Billings, MT) each set five records this season. The Spirits competed in seven meets in 2013.

In her 1st season on the track, Huffman set individual records in the 100, 200, and 400 meter runs. She was joined by Victoria Chaffers (Deltona, FL), Cristi Magracia (Lemon Grove, CA), and Ferguson on the record-breaking 4 X 400 relay. Huffman was joined by Ferguson, Michelle Lawler (Gibsonville, NC), and Chaffers on the sprint medley relay that also owns the new school record. Ferguson broke individual records in the 400 hurdles, 800, and 1500 meter runs.

Stephanie Hubbard (Sanford, NC) and Stephanie Verdi (High Point, NC) were consistently top finishers in meets for the Spirits. Hubbard had a very successful season throwing the javelin, where she continuously broke her own record. Verdi crushed last year's record in the 5,000, and also broke the 3,000 record. Hubbard was joined by Natali Olveda (Salinas, CA), Chaffers, and Magracia on the record-breaking distance medley relay.

Olveda set a new school mark in the 10,000 meter race. Elizabeth Penley (Newport, NC) wrapped up the records in throwing events. She set the school record in the shot put and in the discus.
