Hubbard wins javelin as more records fall at Furman

4x4furmanGreenville, SC-The Salem College track & field team broke six more school records at The Blue Shoes Invitational hosted by Furman. Stephanie Hubbard (Sanford, NC) won the javelin event with a record throw of 34.85 meters. Elizabeth Penley (Newport, NC) and Sawyer Ferguson (Billings, MT) each broke two school records. The 4 X 400 relay crushed its existing school record.

Competing against throwers from all NCAA divisions, Hubbard won the javelin throw by three meters. Penley set school records in the discus and shot put. She finished in 5th in the discus with a throw of 26.68 meters, and 7th in the shot with a throw of 8.38 meters. Stephanie Verdi (High Point, NC) crushed the 3,000 meter record with a 5th-place finish and a time of 11:31.16. 

Sawyer Ferguson set a new 800 meter record with a run of 2:31.76, which was good enough for 8th-place. She was also a part of the 4 X 400 relay that finished in 2nd with a time 4:24.16. The relay consisted of Heather Huffman (Winston-Salem, NC), Cristi Magracia (Lemon Grove, CA), Victoria Chaffers (Deltona, CA) and Ferguson. Huffman had a very strong first leg. Natali Olveda (Salinas, CA) had a strong 13th-place finish in the 3,000.

The Spirits return to action next weekend at the Southeast Regional Championships hosted by Furman.
