<p>April 30, 2013</p>
<p><strong><img src="http://www.salem.edu/athletics/varsity/track-and-field/heatherrunstrack.jpg/image_preview" alt="heatherhuffrunstrack" class="image-right" title="heatherhuffrunstrack" />Winston-Salem, NC-</strong>The Salem College track &amp; field program had its most successful season in 2013. In the 3rd year of existence, the Spirits crushed most records from the previous two seasons. Heather Huffman (Winston-Salem, NC) and Sawyer Ferguson (Billings, MT) each set five records this season. The Spirits competed in seven meets in 2013.&nbsp;</p>
<p>In her 1st season on the track, Huffman set individual records in the 100, 200, and 400 meter runs. She was joined by Victoria Chaffers (Deltona, FL), Cristi Magracia (Lemon Grove, CA), and Ferguson on the record-breaking 4 X 400 relay. Huffman was joined by Ferguson, Michelle Lawler (Gibsonville, NC), and Chaffers on the sprint medley relay that also owns the new school record. Ferguson broke individual records in the 400 hurdles, 800, and 1500 meter runs.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Stephanie Hubbard (Sanford, NC) and Stephanie Verdi (High Point, NC) were consistently top finishers in meets for the Spirits. Hubbard had a very successful season throwing the javelin, where she continuously broke her own record. Verdi crushed last year's record in the 5,000, and also broke the 3,000 record. Hubbard was joined by Natali Olveda (Salinas, CA), Chaffers, and Magracia on the record-breaking distance medley relay.</p>
<p>Olveda set a new school mark in the 10,000 meter race. Elizabeth Penley (Newport, NC) wrapped up the records in throwing events. She set the school record in the shot put and in the discus.</p>

<p><strong><img src="http://www.salem.edu/athletics/varsity/track-and-field/sawyerstart.jpg/image_preview" alt="sawyerstart" class="image-right" title="sawyerstart" />Radford, VA-</strong>The Salem College track &amp; field team finished the 2013 season setting more school records at the Radford Highlander Invitational. Heather Huffman (Winston-Salem, NC), Elizabeth Penley (Newport, NC), and Sawyer Ferguson (Billings, MT) all broke school records in the meet.</p>
<p>Ferguson smashed the 1500 meter school record in a time of 5:15.68, which was good enough for 3rd place. She also finished in 3rd in the 400 meter hurdles. Huffman broke her own 200 meter record in 27.31, and she also finished in 8th place in the 100 meter run. Penley broke her own school record in the shot put with a throw of 8.48 meters, which placed her in 12th place.</p>
<p>Stephanie Hubbard (Sanford, NC) finished in 6th in the javelin throw with a best throw of 34.82 meters. Stephanie Verdi (High Point, NC) finished in 3rd in the 5000 meter run.</p>

<p>April 20, 2013</p>
<p><strong><img src="http://www.salem.edu/athletics/varsity/track-and-field/victoriaruns.jpg/image_preview" alt="victoriaruns;lenoir" class="image-right" title="victoriaruns;lenoir" />Hickory, NC-</strong>The Salem College track &amp; field team continued to break school records at the Southeast Championships hosted by Lenoir-Rhyne. The Spirits were not scored since it was a NCAA DII Championship meet. Stephanie Verdi (High Point, NC) crushed her own school record in the 5000 meter run by close to 50 seconds. Verdi finished in 4th in the race with a time of 19:34.97.</p>
<p>Sawyer Ferguson (Billings, MT) won the 400 hurdle race with a school record of 1:07.01. Heather Huffman (Winston-Salem, NC) broke the longest-standing record on the track team in the 400 meter run. She finished in 9th in the race in 1:04.30. Natali Olveda (Salinas, CA) beat the school record in the 1500 meter run by one second. She finished in 13th in 5:27.95.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Huffman finished in 7th in the 100 meter run in 13.10. Stephanie Hubbard (Sanford, NC) finished in 2nd in the javelin throw with a throw of 33.83 meters in the finals. Victoria Chaffers (Deltona, FL) finished in 12th in the 800 meter race.</p>
<p>The Spirits return to the track next weekend at the Radford Invitational.</p>

<p><strong><img src="http://www.salem.edu/athletics/varsity/track-and-field/4x4relay.jpg/image_preview" alt="4x4furman" class="image-right" title="4x4furman" />Greenville, SC-</strong>The Salem College track &amp; field team broke six more school records at The Blue Shoes Invitational hosted by Furman. Stephanie Hubbard (Sanford, NC) won the javelin event with a record throw of 34.85 meters. Elizabeth Penley (Newport, NC) and Sawyer Ferguson (Billings, MT) each broke two school records. The 4 X 400 relay crushed its existing school record.</p>
<p>Competing against throwers from all NCAA divisions, Hubbard won the javelin throw by three meters. Penley set school records in the discus and shot put. She finished in 5th in the discus with a throw of 26.68 meters, and 7th in the shot with a throw of 8.38 meters. Stephanie Verdi (High Point, NC) crushed the 3,000 meter record with a 5th-place finish and a time of 11:31.16.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Sawyer Ferguson set a new 800 meter record with a run of 2:31.76, which was good enough for 8th-place. She was also a part of the 4 X 400 relay that finished in 2nd with a time 4:24.16. The relay consisted of Heather Huffman (Winston-Salem, NC), Cristi Magracia (Lemon Grove, CA), Victoria Chaffers (Deltona, CA) and Ferguson. Huffman had a very strong first leg. Natali Olveda (Salinas, CA) had a strong 13th-place finish in the 3,000.</p>
<p>The Spirits return to action next weekend at the Southeast Regional Championships hosted by Furman.</p>

<p><strong>Wofford, SC-</strong>The Salem College track &amp; field team set six new school records this&nbsp;<img src="http://www.salem.edu/athletics/varsity/track-and-field/magraciarelay.jpg/image_preview" alt="magraciarelay" class="image-right" title="magraciarelay" />past weekend at the Wofford Invitational. Victoria Chaffers (Deltona, FL) was the member of three different relays that set school marks. The team finished in 13th of 25 programs.</p>
<p>Heather Huffman (Winston-Salem, NC) crushed her existing 100 meter record with a 13.01 second race. Stephanie Hubbard (Sanford, NC) also crushed her own javelin record with a throw of 34.82 meters. She finished in 3rd-place overall out of 26 competitors in the event. Elizabeth Penley (Newport, NC) broke her own shot put record with a throw of 7.97 meters.</p>
<p>The 4X400 meter relay consisting of Chaffers, Cristi Magracia (Lemon Grove, CA), Michelle Lawler (Gibsonville, NC), and Sawyer Ferguson (Billings, MT) beat the existing school record by 7 seconds with a time of 4:36.55. The distance medley set the school record in a time of 14:32.33 with a team of Magracia, Chaffers, Hubbard, and Natali Olveda (Salinas, CA). The last school record was in the sprint medley, which finished in 3rd-place. &nbsp;That relays had a team of Huffman, Ferguson, Lawler, and Chaffers and ran 4:48.23.</p>
<p>The Spirits will return to the track this weekend at the Furman Blue Shoes Invitational.</p>

Stephanie Verdi (High Point, NC) won the 5K at the meet. Stephanie Hubbard (Sanford, NC) finished in 2nd in the javelin throw.</p>
<p>Verdi finished in 1st of 6 runners in the 5K. Hubbard finished in 2nd of 18 throwers in the javelin with a throw of 31.31 meters. Heather Huffman (Winston-Salem, NC) finished in 14th in the 100 meter (13.39) and 13th in the 200 meter race (28.00). Cristi Magracia (Lemon Grove, CA) came across in 17th in the 800 (2:40.18).</p>
<p>The Spirits will return to the track on April 6th at the Terrier Relays hosted by Wofford.</p>

Stephanie Verdi (High Point, NC) crushed her own 5K record with a 20:18 run and 17th-place finish. Sawyer Ferguson (Billings, MT) broke her 400 hurdle record with a 5th-place finish in 1:08.08.</p>
<p>The Spirits only had 5 participants in the meet due to spring break. Heather Huffman (Winston-Salem, NC) continued her strong season finishing in 17th of 34 in the 100 meter run in 13.55. Courtney Hedgecock (San Diego, CA) finished in 48th in the 1500, and Michelle Lawler (Gibsonville, NC) finished in 18th in the 400 in a personal record run. Stephanie Hubbard (Sanford, NC) finished in 13th in the javelin and was the only DIII participant in the event.</p>
<p>The team will run at the Winston-Salem State Relays this weekend.</p>

The team broke six new Salem College records in the meet today.</p>
<p>Heather Huffman (Winston-Salem, NC) broke both of her own records in the 100 meter and 200 meter races. She finished in 14th in the 100 (13.34) and 13th in the 200 (27.65). Victoria Chaffers (Deltona, FL) smashed the 800 meter record and finished in 13th (2:39.54).&nbsp;</p>
<p>Stephanie Verdi (High Point, NC) broke her previous team record in the 5,000 meter by 16 seconds to finish in 10th (20:43.03). Natali Olveda (Salinas, CA) set a new record in the 10,000 meter and finished in 13th overall (45:20.17). Hubbard smashed the school javelin record that she set two weeks ago with a throw of 34.25 meters.&nbsp;</p>
<p>The Spirits return to action next week as they travel to High Point University on the 23rd.</p>

Penley set new records in the discus and shot put, Hubbard set a record in the javelin, and Ferguson in the 400 hurdles.</p>
<p>Penley finished in 9th in the discus at the meet and in 16th in the shot put. Hubbard came in 4th in the javelin, and Ferguson crossed the line in a team-best 3rd in the 400 hurdles. Stephanie Verdi was just 5 seconds off of her own 5000 meter record with a time of 21:04.41.</p>
