Devoe and Murphy Earn First Victories of Their College Careers
March 2- The Salem College Tennis Team hosted Ferrum College Friday afternoon in a non-conference tennis match in Winston-Salem. When the Spirits and Panthers had finished serving and mashing the tennis balls, the first three victories of the season emerged for Salem College. Anna Devoe ( Chesapeake, VA) and Tiara Murphy (Mobile, AL) won their matches and then teamed up in doubles play to defeat their Ferrum opponents. The results are as follows:
Singles- Anna Devoe(SC) defeated Shauna Simon(FC) 6-3,6-0
- Tiara Murphy (SC) defeated Tabitha Brown(FC) 6-4,6-2
- Katie Porter(FC) defeated Michala Michaux(SC) 7-5,6-0
- Dayna Jacobsen(FC) defeated Rachel Fichthorn(SC) 6-2,6-1
- Leah Austin(FC) defeated Brooke Hedgepeth (SC) 6-3,6-1
- Reniesha Diggs(FC) defeated Default
Doubles
- Devoe/Murphy(SC) defeated Brown/Simon(FC) 8-8(10-5)
- Porter/Jacobsen (FC ) defeated Michaux/Richthorn (SC) 8-2
- Akers/Austin(FC) defeated Default
According to Head Tennis Coach Kieran Brown: “With injured #1 player Elise Norton out of the line-up, Salem’s Tennis Team battled to a 6-3 loss to Ferrum College. Anna Devoe and Tiara Murphy were forced to play up one position and rose to the occasion with victories in singles and a marathon doubles win over Ferrum.”
