Softball finishes in 4th place at GSAC Tournament

The Salem College athletic department hosted a very successful 2013 Great South Athletic Conference Softball Tournament this past weekend at Salem College and Forsyth Country Day School

alliewatkinspitchWinston-Salem, NC-The Salem College athletic department hosted a very successful 2013 Great South Athletic Conference Softball Tournament this past weekend at Salem College and Forsyth Country Day School. The Spirits finished in 4th place in the tournament after going 2-2 in four games. The Spirits conclude their season with a 14-22 overall record, and 11-9 record during Great South play.

The Spirits began action by crushing Pine Manor College 9-1 to remain in the winner's bracket on Friday. Kristi Morton (Trussville, AL) went 3 for 3 with 2 runs and 1 run batted in to pace the Spirits.

Top-seeded Huntingdon would defeat the Spirits 6-2 on Friday afternoon, which placed Salem in the loser's bracket. Kierston Garner (Danbury, NC) led the team with 1 hit, 1 run, and 1 run batted in.

On Saturday morning, the Spirits cruised to another 9-1 victory against Wesleyan. Karson Chapman (Lewisville, NC) had 2 hits and 3 runs. The Spirits were eliminated on Saturday afternoon, when they dropped a hard-fought battle with Agnes Scott, 3-1. Allie Watkins (Locust, NC) pitched 3 complete games, and only allowed 10 runs. Finlandia won the tournament.
