Softball concludes successful 2013 season

The Salem College softball team ended a successful 2013 season this past weekend at the Great South Athletic Conference Tournament.

softballteamhighWinston-Salem, NC-The Salem College softball team ended a successful 2013 season this past weekend at the Great South Athletic Conference Tournament. The Spirits, which were the host school, finished the tournament in 4th place. The softball program has only been in the NCAA for two seasons, and they finished the 2013 season with a 9-7 GSAC record, and 14-22 overall record.

In the GSAC Tournament, Salem went 2-2. They defeated Pine Manor and Wesleyan, while falling to Huntingdon and Agnes Scott. 

The Spirits had several players earn Great South end-of-the-year honors. Kierston Garner (Danbury, NC) had a very successful first-year. She was honored on the all-conference team and all-freshmen team. She was also a two-time GSAC Player of the Week. Garner was 4th in the conference with 33 runs batted in, and 3rd with 6 home runs.

Kristi Morton (Trussville, AL) was selected to the all-conference team for the 2nd straight year. She led the team and finished in 7th in the GSAC with a batting average of .438. Kayla Kennedy (Goldsboro, NC) was also selected to the all-conference team. Kennedy earned another honor by being chosen as the team's representative on the GSAC All-Sportsmanship Team.

Allie Watkins (Locust, NC) earned all-freshmen honors. She was the team's number one pitcher the entire season. She also finished 3rd in the conference with 35 runs batted in. Karson Chapman (Lewisville, NC) was the final member of the all-freshmen team from Salem. Chapman was the team's lead-off hitter, and she finished in 2nd in the conference with 22 stolen bases. Chapman also led the entire NCAA DIII in walks.

Emily Devane (Lillington, NC) and Breanna Griffin (Millers Creek, NC) were both selected to the GSAC All-Academic team. The Spirits will graduate one senior, Amber Miller (Mebane, NC).
