Jay Benfield joins soccer staff

jbenfieldcoachWinston-Salem, NC-Head Coach Jay Callahan has announced that former NCAA Division I men's soccer player and coach, Jay Benfield, has joined the Salem College soccer staff for the 2014-15 season. Benfield will work predominately with goalkeepers, but will also assist with field players.

Benfield is currently the head men's varsity coach at Mount Tabor High School in Winston-Salem. In his first year, he won conference and region coach of the year. He led Mt. Tabor to a Central Piedmont Conference Championship and the 2nd round of the NC 4A Tournament. He also works with the Twin City Youth Soccer Club as a head coach for the 95 boys premier team.

Benfield was the starting goalkeeper for the University of North Carolina at Greensboro Spartans as a junior and senior (2004-05), and both of those teams reached the third round of the NCAA tournament. He played for UNCG from 2001-2005.

Benfield is married to the former Kimberly Wood. They reside in Winston-Salem.


After receiving his degree from UNCG in 2006, Benfield spent two seasons at West Forsyth High School, his alma mater, as an assistant and two at Lees-McRae. Benfield helped Lees-McRae to the NCAA DII National Championship Game in 2009. He was an assistant coach for UNCG for three years, and helped them to the SoCon Regular Season Championship in 2011.
