Soccer loses hard-fought game at Meredith

The Salem College soccer team lost their first game of the season today at Meredith College, 2-0. Salem gave up a goal in each half, including an own goal in the second half. The Spirits finished in second in the Meredith Matchup, and Tia Bringhurst (Hurricane, UT), Mackenzie Schmidt (Columbus, OH) and Courtney Sauer (Carthage, NC) were all selected to the all-tournament team. Salem falls to 2-1 with the loss, and Meredith improves to 3-0.

Jazmineb1Raleigh, NC-The Salem College soccer team lost their first game of the season today at Meredith College, 2-0. Salem gave up a goal in each half, including an own goal in the second half. The Spirits finished in second in the Meredith Matchup, and Tia Bringhurst (Hurricane, UT), Mackenzie Schmidt (Columbus, OH) and Courtney Sauer (Carthage, NC) were all selected to the all-tournament team. Salem falls to 2-1 with the loss, and Meredith improves to 3-0.

Alex Calvert put Meredith on the board in the 22nd minute of the match. Sabrina Thiel (Hillsboro, OH) was close to scoring on a direct kick from twenty-five yards out in the end of the first half.

Alexi Saganich (McLeansville, NC) and Erica Edwards (Clayton, NC) each had great opportunities in the second half that they were unable to convert. Meredith scored an own goal in the 62nd minute to take a 2-0 lead. Jazmine Bridgeman (Mill Spring, NC) finished with nine saves in the net.

Salem has a two week break before they host Covenant College on September 18th.
