Roanoke, VA-The Salem College soccer team won the Hollins University Seven-On-Seven Tournament today. The tournament consisted of Salem, Shenandoah Valley United, Hollins University, and Averett University. Salem defeated Shenandoah Valley United in the championship match, 2-1.

Salem fell behind SVU 1-0 in the championship match at halftime, before Sabrina Thiel (Hillsboro, OH) scored two second half goals to secure the win for the Spirits. Thiel scored her first goal off of an assist by Tia Bringhurst (Hurricane, UT) and Courtney Sauer (Carthage, NC). She struck a solid direct kick to give Salem the win.

The Spirits made it to the championship by going 2-1 in their first three games. Thiel finished the day with three goals for Salem. Bringhurst, Sauer, Samantha Hubbard (Sanford, NC), and Sierra Presnell (Marion, NC) each added one goal on the day for Salem.

Kaitlyn Horner (Elkhart, IN), a typical field player who played her first collegiate games as a goalkeeper, only allowed four goals against the Spirits in all four games. She was assisted by a strong defensive effort by Megan Lisle (Lawrenceville, GA), Kirby Callaway (Fayetteville, NC), and Celeste Pantuso (Gastonia, NC).

The soccer team will open their 2010 season on September 1st at Hollins.
