Soccer wins first match 9-3 against Peace

Winston-Salem, NC-The Salem College soccer team started off the 2009 season in an impressive fashion with a 9-3 victory against Peace. Salem jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the fifth minute on a goal by Tia Bringhurst (Hurricane, UT) and never looked back. Tara Madden (Greenville, SC) scored a hat trick for the Spirits to lead the team in scoring. Salem jumps out to a 1-0 record, while Peace drops to 0-1.

Bringhurst added a second goal in the 12th minute off of an assist by Erica Edwards (Clayton, NC). Edwards would score two minutes later to make it 3-0 with an assist by Courtney Sauer (Carthage, NC). Madden scored Salem's fourth goal in the 27th minute from a feed by Tori Collier (Raleigh, NC). Salem would finish their first half scoring in the 32nd minute when Sabrina Thiel (Hillsboro, OH) hit a long shot. Peace would get on the board in the 37th minute, and the two teams went into the half with Salem leading 5-1.

Salem started out quick in the second half with two goals by Madden in the 53rd and 58th minute to make it 7-1. Thiel added her second goal of the match in the 66th minute. Peace would score two more in the 82nd and 83rd minute. Samantha Hubbard (Sanford, NC) finished off Salem's scoring in the 86th minute. Jazmine Bridgeman (Mill Spring, NC) and Brittany Tedrick (Batavia, OH) split time in goal for Salem.

Salem outshot Peace 24-14, and had 10 corners to 1 for Peace. Salem will return to action this weekend as they head to Raleigh for the Meredith Matchup.
