October 5, 2008
Winston-Salem, NC-The Salem College soccer team won their 11th straight home victory today 9-0 against Wilson College. Salem had goals from nine different players in the game, and four goals in the first nine minutes. Salem's record improves to 7-4, while Wilson drops to 0-7.
The Spirits took the lead in the 2nd minute when Kim Wisen (Madison, OH) finished a cross from Lauren Hansen (Jacksonville, NC). Lauren Wisen (Madison, OH) would score again one minute later with an assist by Hansen. Samantha Hubbard (Sanford, NC) scored 23 seconds later. Tori Collier (Raleigh, NC) finished a shot in the top corner to give Salem a 4-0 lead in the 9th minute. Tatum Justice (Jacksonville, NC), Courtney Sauer (Carthage, NC), Brittany Thurlow (Whispering Pines, NC), and Samantha Niemiec (State Road, NC) would all also score in the first half to give Salem an 8-0 lead. Salem outshot Wilson 35-0 in the first half.
Kayla Stover (Sturgeon Bay, WI), who is the only senior on Salem's roster, would score her first goal of the season in the 48th minute. The goal would be the only shot of the half for either team. Andrea Baldwin (Hudson, NC), Brittany Tedrick (Batavia, OH) and Michala Michaux (Morganton, NC) shared time in goal for the shutout.
"We have had some problems this season with finishing, and also playing down to the level of teams that are not good as us," said Head Coach Jay Callahan. "We did much better in both areas today. I was also glad to see Kayla get a goal this season, since she has played defense all season for the team."
Salem takes on Meredith College on October 8th at 4:30. Salem fell to Meredith 1-0 earlier this year in Decatur, GA.
