Fichthorn Has Strong Finish in Roanoke

Roanoke, VA-The Salem College cross country team finished in 8th place out of 14 teams in the Maroon Invitational hosted by Roanoke College this morning. Rachel Fichthorn (Nokesville, VA) finished in second place, and also was one of three runners to break the course record. Fichthorn finished the 5k course in 20:53, eight seconds behind the winner, Liz Mumaw (Roanoke College).

Julie Piernikowski (Potomac, MD) finished in 24th place overall, and Lauren Meek (Draper, VA) finished in 30th. Roanoke College was the overall winner with five runners in the top ten.

“It was an interesting day as Rachel started this morning by falling during our 6:30 am shake-up run and bleeding from her knee, hip, and both hands before the team left Salem College," said Coach J.P. Widner. "Four hours later, a bandaged and bruised Rachel became one of three runners to break the course record, and she finished second overall out of 89 runners. Julie and Lauren ran well as they finished 24th and 30th place to finish in the top 1/3 of competitors. Overall, the team ran as well as possible. We were missing Kirsten Roberts, which took us out of competing for the top four spots. We hope to have her back for our next meet.”

Salem heads to Greensboro next week for the Greensboro Invitational on September 27th at 1:00.
