Season Preview: 2012-13 Basketball
November 13, 2012
Winston-Salem, NC-The Salem College basketball team is set to start their 2012-2013 season this weekend at the Jackie Ammons Tournament hosted by William Peace University. Head Coach Anita Howard will kickoff her first season with 11 new players.
Howard says, "We will need to make up for a lack of experience by being intense and valuing each possession." The Spirits will play Washington College of Maryland on Friday the 16th at 6:00 in Raleigh. Washington College was 16-9 in 2011-2012.
The Spirits have played 2 scrimmages against talented NCAA Division II teams from Pfeiffer and Barton this preseason. "Every test will be a new one for this team and I am anxious to see how we measure up against the teams on our schedule," said Howard.
Amber Miller (Mebane, NC) and Shamaz Denerson (Atlanta, GA) are the 2 seniors on the team. Denerson played in 11 games in 2011-2012 and led the team with 13 points per game.
"Chemistry and the ability to execute will be major factors as we look to establish our identity and build this program into a contender," said Howard.
"One thing that I can guarantee, we will improve with every contest as we strive to be excellent at the things that don't take talent," says Howard.
The Spirits play their first conference game on January 5th when they host Huntingdon.
