Basketball loses to Washington College in season opener

Raleigh, NC-The Salem College basketball team lost their season opener to Washington College, 69-56, in the 1st round of the Jackie Ammons Tournament at William Peace. The Spirits, who only have a couple returners, played a tight game with Washington up until the end of the 2nd half. Satavia Taylor (Chicago, IL) led the Spirits with 14 points and 6 steals. The Spirits are now 0-1.
The 1st 10 minutes of the game were evenly played and very defensive with the teams playing to a 10-10 tie. Salem held a 17-15 advantage at the 5:41 mark, before Washington went on a 15-5 run to close out the half.
Salem came out on fire in the 2nd half and went on a 13-3 run to start the half. Washington proved to be too much to close out the game.
Jasmine Shabazz (Buffalo, NY) added 12 points and 5 rebounds. Shamaz Denerson (Atlanta, GA) led the Spirits with 6 rebounds and added 8 points, while Bria Patterson (Winterhaven, FL) also had 8 points.
Kelly Mitchell had a game-high 15 points for Washington. Salem will play again today in the 3rd-place game against Hollins University at 2:00. Hollins lost a 68-58 game to William Peace last night to open their season.
