Basketball blows out Agnes Scott by 25

The Salem College basketball team destroyed Agnes Scott today at home, 65-40 to cap off a great regular season. The Spirits celebrated Amber Miller (Mebane, NC) and Shamaz Denerson (Atlanta, GA) in their final home game as Spirits. The win also moves the Spirits into a 2nd-place tie with Agnes Scott to conclude the conference regular season play. Salem finished the regular season at 15-10 overall, just 1 win shy of the school record for basketball wins.

Basketball ready for Great South Tournament

The Salem College basketball team is entering this weekend's Great South Tournament with their highest seeding ever. The Spirits will be the 2nd seeded team and will play Wesleyan on Friday at noon in the 1st quarterfinal game of the tournament hosted by Huntingdon. The Spirits are 2-0 against the Pioneers this season, with an 81-32 home win and 79-24 road win.

Salem Basketball Wins GSAC Player and Coach of the Year Awards

The Great South Athletic Conference announced their women’s basketball postseason award winners on Thursday morning and junior guard Satavia Taylor of Salem College claimed conference Player of the Year honors to highlight the list of recipients. Taylor, a do-it-all playmaker with an array of skills, edged out Agnes Scott’s Genefine Sapateh for the league’s top prize. Alexis Lee of Pine Manor College claimed the prestigious Freshman of the Year distinction while Salem College head coach, Anita Howard, earned the Coach of the Year nod after guiding the Spirits through an outstanding season.

The Salem College basketball team stormed back from a 14-point deficit in the 2nd half to beat Agnes Scott, 53-51 and advance to tomorrow's Great South Championship Finals. The Salem College basketball team completed one of the most successful seasons in Salem Athletic history with a 73-61 loss against Huntingdon College in the Great South Championship Game. The Spirits came into the game as the 2nd seed and the Hawks were the 1st seed and host. GSAC Player of the Year, Satavia Taylor (Chicago, IL), led the Spirits with 15 points and 2 blocks. Salem ends the season with the most wins in basketball history at 17-11.

Shabazz averaged 16 points per game and 12.3 rebounds per game as the Spirits went 1-2 last week. She notched a double-double with 21 points and 11 rebounds in a loss to Guilford and followed that up with 6 points and 13 rebounds in a loss at Agnes Scott. She capped her stellar week with another double-double, tallying 21 points and 13 rebounds in a road victory over Spelman.

Taylor wins GSAC Player of the Week for 3rd time

Taylor averaged 19.5 points per game, 4.5 rebounds per game, 3 steals per game and 1.5 blocks per game as Salem split contests with D-II Wingate (L, 77-65) and conference foe Huntingdon (W, 70-49) over the break. Taylor drilled 15-of-28 shots from the field in the process for a stellar 54% success rate. This is the third time on the young season that Taylor has earned the GSAC Player of the Week distinction
