Basketball falls in overtime game against Spelman
January 14, 2011
Winston-Salem, NC-The Salem College basketball team
pulled off an impressive rally to force an overtime game, which they
would drop to Spelman 61-58. Sarah Smith (Hays, NC) led Salem with 10
points and 12 rebounds in the Great South game. The Spirits fall to 1-9
overall and 0-5 in the GSAC, and Spelman improves to 1-8 and 1-5 in the
GSAC.
Both teams started off sloppy for the first 5 minutes of the game. Salem would fall behind by as many as 9 points in the first half, but they clawed back in and the game went into halftime with a 24-22 advantage for the Jaguars.
Salem again struggled in the second half to get started and fell behind by as many as 9 points. Once again, they rallied at the end of the second half to force overtime. Stephanie Hubbard (Sanford, NC) sunk 2 free throws with 1 second remaining in regulation to send the game to extra time. The Jaguars defense was too much in overtime, only allowing 1 point by Salem in extra time.
Hubbard finished with 12 points, 8 rebounds, and 2 steals for the Spirits. Shamaz Denerson (Atlanta, GA) added 15 points for Salem, and Karoline Summerville (Charlotte, NC) had 14 points. Shanda Kennedy led Spelman with a game-high 17 points.
Salem returns to action tomorrow when they host Piedmont College in another conference game.
