Basketball loses first conference game of ths season against Piedmont

Winston-Salem, NC-The Salem College basketball team dropped their first Great South Athletic Conference (GSAC) game of the season to Piedmont College. Piedmont held on for the 81-68 win despite 17 points and 5 rebounds by Racheal Salmons (Yadkinville, NC). Salem falls to 2-1 in the conference and 3-3 overall, and Piedmont improves to 2-4 overall.

The game was even for the first fifteen minutes with several lead changes. The Spirits would hold their last lead of the game, 19-17, with 5:30 left in the first half. Piedmont finished the first half on a 19-8 run to take a 36-27 lead into the break. Michala Michaux (Morganton, NC) led the Spirits at halftime with 9 points.

Salem cut the lead to five with 14:37 remaining before Piedmont went on a 16-2 run over the next five minutes. The Spirits would cut the lead back to ten, but that was the closest they would get. 

Michaux ended the game with 12 points. Kelsey Rector (State Road, NC) scored 14 points, and Amber Miller (Mebane, NC) added 9 points for Salem. Lisa Jennings had a game-high 18 points to lead Piedmont.

The Spirits return to action in 2010 when they host conference opponent Maryville on January 3rd at 4:00.
