Winston-Salem, NC-The Salem College basketball team improved to 2-0 in the Great South Athletic Conference (GSAC) with a 75-63 victory against visiting Spelman College. Sarah Smith (Hays, NC) had her third double-double of the season with 19 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Spirits. Salem improves to 3-2 on the season, and Spelman drops to 1-3.

Salem jumped out to an early 16-4 lead in the first five minutes. Lauren Redman (Lenoir, NC) would score 16 first-half points for Salem. Salem would go into the break with a 40-26 advantage.

The Spirits would continue their hot play and stretch their lead to 46-28 with 17:04 remaining. Spelman went on a 25-8 run over the next ten minutes to cut the lead to one point. Over the final seven minutes, Smith converted two very important three-point plays to break the game back open.

Redman finished with 19 points on the night. Michala Michaux (Morganton, NC) scored 12 points and had 4 steals for Salem. Rachael Salmons (Yadkinville, NC) finished with 10 points and 8 rebounds. Jessica Reagans had a game-high 20 points for Spelman.

Salem returns to action tomorrow afternoon when they host conference foe Piedmont College at 2:00.
