Basketball drops conference game against LaGrange

Winston-Salem, NC-The Salem College basketball team dropped a home game against LaGrange College, 87-82. The Spirits kept the game close, but foul shooting sealed the win for LaGrange. Salem celebrated the last home regular season game for Michala Michaux (Morganton, NC) and Lauren Redman (Lenoir, NC). Michaux finished the game with 10 points, and Redman contributed 3 points. Salem falls to 9-10 overall and 5-7 in the Great South. LaGrange improves to 14-7 overall and 9-2 in conference play.
Salem held their last lead of the game at 29-28 late in the first half. LaGrange held a 39-35 advantage at the break. Sarah Wright (Siler City, NC) led the Spirits with 11 points in the half.
LaGrange would go up by as many as 11 points in the second. They led 76-65 with four minutes left, before Salem went on an impressive 9-0 run to cut the lead to two at 76-74. LaGrange was able to hold off the Spirits over the last two minutes.
Sarah Smith (Hays, NC) led the Spirits with 22 points. Kelsey Rector (State Road, NC) contributed 17 points and 7 assists. Wright finished with 13 points, and Shamaz Denerson (Atlanta, GA) led the Spirits with 6 rebounds. Ashley Hoglund led LaGrange with 25 points, including 7 three-pointers.
Salem hits the road next weekend and will get a re-match with LaGrange on Valentine's Day at 7:00.
