Spirits Win Season Opener!
Raleigh, NC- The Salem College Basketball Team traveled to Peace College Friday night to play in the first game of the Jackie Ammons Memorial Tournament. The Spirits sprinted out to a 34-4 lead in the first 13 minutes of the game and led at the half 39-24. The Pacers fought back and scored 15 unanswered points in the second half to pull within 3 points, 55-52. The Spirits then regrouped and outscored Peace 17-8 in the final 5 minutes to gain the biggest victory in Salem College’s history, 72-60. The 72 points that the Spirits scored broke the old school record for points scored in a game.
Salem College (1-0) was led by first year Michala Michaux (Morganton, NC) who scored 17 points, grabbed 8 rebounds and stole the ball 7 times. Shakila Springs (Winston-Salem, NC) added 16 points and was unstoppable on the boards. Springs finished with 14 rebounds and scored the final 5 points in the game to help secured the victory. Lauren Redman (Lenoir, NC) and Jewell Robinson (Winston-Salem, NC) each scored 9 points while Alexandrea Ervin (Morganton, NC) scored 8 points. Stephanie Wilson (Morganton, NC) scored 5 points while Casey Jones (Winston-Salem, NC) and Billie Harmon (Reidsville, NC) added 3. Lindsay Cross scored 2 points and secured 4 rebounds.
The defense played a huge part in the victory by holding the Pacers (0-1) to only 28% shooting for the entire game and by winning the rebounding battle 53-43. Jewell Robinson ended the first half by blocking 3 consecutive shots by her opponents.
The Spirits will play Chowan College (1-1) in the championship game at 3 pm on Saturday.
