November 29- Salem College defeated the visiting Averett University Cougars in a non-conference basketball game Wednesday evening. Playing in front of the largest crowd of the season, the Spirits played well while the crowd danced and sang to the “Disco Night” music that filled the air. The lead swapped hands many times in the first half with Salem leading at the intermission 33-31. In the second half, the Spirits (2-2) extended their lead as much as 15 points and eventually won 74-65, breaking the team scoring record to go along with their second win of the season.

Alexandrea Ervin (Morganton, NC) led the Spirits in scoring with 18 points, followed by Michala Michaux (Morganton, NC) with 17, Lauren Redman (Lenoir, NC) with 14 and Stephanie Wilson (Morganton, NC) with 11. Shakila Springs (Winston-Salem, NC) led the Spirits in rebounding with 11 to go with her 6 points.

Kristen Kozar led the Cougars (0-5) with 22 points.

The Spirits will host Greensboro College in Winston-Salem on Monday night, December 4. It will be “Country-Western Night” as the Spirits seek their 3rd victory of the season.
