Raleigh- The Spirits of Salem College played the Chowan College Hawks Saturday afternoon in the championship game of the Jackie Ammons Memorial Tournament. Chowan jumped off to a 12-0 lead in the first half and led 35-26 at halftime. The Spirits battled back and cut the lead to 45-41 with 9 minutes to go. The Hawks slowly pulled away and handed the Spirits their first loss in the 2006-2007 season by a score of 66-50.

Salem’s Michala Michaux and Shakila Springs were named to the All-Tournament Team along with Joi Hazel (Chowan), Keyon Sellers (Chowan), Allason Holt (Chatham) and Christy Freeman (Peace). Hazel was named the tournament MVP.

Michala Michaux (Morgan, NC) led the Spirits (1-1) in scoring with 12 points while grabbing 8 rebounds. Shakila Springs (Winston-Salem, NC) led the team in rebounding with 11 while scoring 9 points and 5 steals. Lauren Redman (LeNoir, NC) and Alexandrea Ervin (Morganton, NC) scored 7 points apiece while Lindsay Cross (Asheboro, NC) secured 9 rebounds. Chowan College (2-1) was led by Joi Hazel with 16 points.

Salem College returns to action on Tuesday, November 21, as they host North Carolina Wesleyan College at 5:30 pm in Winston-Salem.
