2013-14 Preview by Second Year Head Coach Anita Howard
Last season, we accomplished many of our goals and came very close to several others. The team came a long way in a hurry and adjusted well to the new changes and additions. It took a while for the chemistry to mesh in our style of play, but slow and steady wins the race. We soon grew a great deal in terms of confidence, both individually and as a team as the season wore on. We now know what it takes to be successful in the GSAC and hope to pick up where we left off in hopes of making it to the NCAA tournament. We are ready to take the next step. With continued hard work, focus and good health, 2014 can be a very good year for the Spirits.
Experience, depth and versatility will be our strengths. We probably return more quality experience than just about any team in the conference. And the good news is that they are still developing even more as players this season. We are balanced inside and out, with several players who can be successful at multiple positions. As a result, we will show a lot of different looks on both offense and defense.
Satavia Taylor and Jasmine Shabazz have proven that they are among the best players in the GSAC, and this season I expect they will prove to be among the best in the nation. Each has come back stronger and more determined and this will bring that much more seasoning to the table. Bria Patterson came through down the stretch in a big way last season and is another player to watch out for in this regard. She is a young and energetic guard who is fearless. We brought in a few new faces that will look to continue to push Salem to new heights.
Coming up a game short last year has the team more driven and hungry to succeed this year. We plan to be a quicker, more explosive but poised team this year looking to execute on both ends of the court. We will compete with a SPIRIT OF FEROCITY as we look to dominate in gyms across the board.
