Salem Soccer Wins National Team Ethics Award

The Salem College soccer team was one of only 88 teams in both men's and women's soccer for all NCAA divisions to earn the Team Ethics Award presented by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. Salem earned the silver level medal for only accumulating 3 yellow cards and 0 red cards during the 2012 season, which they finished 16-3-1.

Basketball eases past Huntingdon in first GSAC game

The Salem College basketball team cruised to a 70-49 win against Huntingdon in their first Great South game of the season. Jasmine Shabazz (Buffalo, NY) recorded a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds in the win. Salem improves to 7-4 overall and 1-0 in the conference, while the Hawks drop to 5-8 and 0-1.

Basketball hangs tough with Wingate

The Salem College basketball team hung tough with NCAA Division II Wingate University in their first game of 2013. The Spirits lost 77-65 in the non-conference game. Satavia Taylor (Chicago, IL), led Salem with 23 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 assists. Salem falls to 6-4 on the season, while Wingate improves to 6-5.

“Emily is an integral part of this team this year as we strive to reach higher heights. With her previous DIII playing and coaching experience she has an intimate insight to what it means to be a student athlete on this level. MacKenzie Schmidt earns first Scholar All-Region Award in Salem History

MacKenzie Schmidt (Columbus, OH) became the 1st student-athlete in Salem College history to earn NCAA Scholar All-South Region Honors for her play on the soccer field this past fall and for her work in the classroom. She was placed on the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Scholar All-Region Honorable Mention Tea. Schmidt holds a 3.894 cumulative grade point average and she led the Great South Athletic Conference with 11 assists and 0.55 assists per game. She is a junior and majors in Not-For-Profit.

Basketball moves to 6-3 with win against Averett

The Salem College basketball team won their 2nd straight game as they pulled out a close contest in a 66-62 win against Averett. Bria Patterson (Winterhaven, FL) hit 2 clutch free-throws with 6 seconds left to preserve the win. Salem improves to 6-3 overall and Averett falls to 1-5.

The Great South Athletic Conference announced the winter sports week four Player of the Week on Wednesday morning and women’s basketball player Satavia Taylor of Salem College was selected as the winner through exclusive voting by the league sports information directors.

Mike Hollman takes over Salem College tennis program

Salem College Director of Athletics Melissa Barrett has announced that Mike Hollman will take over the Salem College tennis program. Hollman is very familiar with Salem College. He was the assistant tennis coach for 4 years, and he has worked with the soccer program for the past 5 years. Hollman will immediately take over the program, which went 4-11 overall last year and lost in the Great South quarterfinals.

The Salem College basketball team ended a two-game losing streak with a convincing win at Meredith, 52-40. Jasmine Shabazz (Buffalo, NY) paved the way for the victory with 17 points and 7 rebounds. The Spirits improve to 5-3 this season, and Meredith fall to 1-4.
