The Salem College Equestrian Team competes on the intercollegiate level against other colleges in our zone and region. We are made up of two teams: hunt seat and dressage team. Our current team leaders are Thuy Harrison (C’2015) and Billie Jo Shively (C’2015).
Hunt Seat Team competes in the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA), which was based on the concept that students in college should be allow to partake in horse competitions despite their level of skill or monetary standing. There are typically 8 IHSA shows through the year: 5 during the fall semester and 3 during the spring semester. We compete in both flat and jump classes, from Beginner Walk-Trot to Advance Open. Our team is in Zone 5 Region 4, and we compete against Wake Forest University, Virginia Tech University, Elon University, Virginia Intermont College, High Point University, University of North Carolina Greensboro and more.
Dressage Team competes in the Intercollegiate Dressage Association (IDA). There are 4 levels that we may compete in: First Level, Upper Training, Lower Training, and Introductory. In total, there are 8 shows per school year: 4 in the fall and 4 in the spring. We compete in Region H against Virginia Intermont College, Virginia Tech, Appalachian State University, Wake Forest University, and High Point University.
Michelle Hargreaves specializes in Eventing, Hunter/Jumpers, and Dressage. She received her degree in Animal Science from North Carolina State University. Later on, she was awarded a higher degree in Equine Management from Plumpton College in England. After finishing her education, she became a lecturer at Plumpton College and the University of Brighton in England for the Horse Management courses. During her stay in the United Kingdom, she continued to compete and train horses, which ultimately helped her to achieve her qualifications to be a British Horse Society qualified instructor. Following her return to the United States, she established Hidden “K” Stables, which she is the sole owner of. After its establishment, the stable became a US Pony Club Riding Center. Now, she is the coach for both the Salem College Equestrian Team and the Wake Forest Equestrian Team; while still instructing the Hidden “K” Stables students.
