Equestrian
The Salem College Equestrian Team was re-founded in 2010 by Jillian Slinger (C’2013) and Kellie Younger (C’2013). The two riders worked hard in a short amount of time to be able to start a Salem College Equestrian Team in order to join IHSA. Salem College has never been a member in the past and as of fall 2010 Salem College is now a registered team for IHSA in Zone 5 Region 4.

Michelle Hargreaves is the new riding coach for Salem College and is also the riding coach for Wake Forest University. Michelle is the owner and trainer at Hidden “K” Stables located 20 minutes from Salem campus. She rode for the NCSU Equestrian Team while she got her Animal Science Degree before she went to Plumpton College in the UK receiving a higher degree in Equine Management. While over in England, Michelle received her qualifications to be a British Horse Society qualified instructor. She also competed and trained horses while lecturing at the Plumpton College and the University of Brighton in Horse Management courses. Hidden “K” Stables is also accredited by the United States Pony Club.
Michelle specializes in Eventing, Hunter/Jumpers, Dressage, and Western. All students are allowed to take any discipline riding with her and do not have to compete if they do not wish too. Michelle is the Coach for the WFU hunter/jumper team (IHSA) and their dressage team (IDA); she also launched and teaches Horse Management classes at Forsyth Technical Community College. Michelle helped Salem College start an IHSA (hunter/jumper) team which competes against Appalachian State University, Virginia Tech, Elon, UNC-G, Averett University, Wake Forest University, High Point University, Western Carolina University, Virginia Intermont College, and North Carolina A&T State University. She is also helping Salem College start an IDA (dressage) team as well that should begin to compete in the spring of 2011.
The team has one lesson and one hack per week for each semester and riders have the option of riding either semesters or both. Lesson horses are available for use and boarding is also available for riders who wish to bring their own horses. There are typically 7 IHSA shows throughout the year and other shows in the area as well. We strongly encourage all IHSA riders to ride year round. Experience is not required but time and financial commitment is but it’s worth it and the team is always looking for new members!
