Featured Athlete of the Month-Katherine Elliott (Tennis)
Katherine moved from the number two singles spot from last year to the number one spot this season. She is also teaming with Summer Whitener on the number one doubles team. Katherine has helped lead the Spirits to their best start ever with a 4-1 record.
Tennis moves to 4-1 with two wins
The Salem College tennis team defeated Ferrum and Emory and Henry today. Summer Whitener (Sandy Springs, NC) won both of her #2 singles matches on the day. Salem improves to their best start in the past three seasons and a 4-1 record.
Shamaz Denerson named to GSAC All-Conference Team
The Great South Athletic Conference announced its 2010-11 women’s basketball All-Conference awards earlier today with Shamaz Denerson (Atlanta, GA) representing Salem on the All-Conference team. She averaged 15.0 points and 8.1 rebounds per game this season. Jojo Hall was also selected to the GSAC All-Academic Team. Sarah Wright (Siler City, NC) represented Salem on the GSAC Sportsmanship Team.

Tennis loses match at Guilford College
Greensboro, NC-The Salem College tennis team lost 9-0 to Guilford College today. Amy Allison (Geneva, OH) played the closest match for the Spirits at the number six singles position. Salem falls to 1-1, while Guilford improves to 2-1.
Rector scores 20 in last game for Spirits in loss against SVU
The Salem College basketball team went down fighting in their last game of the season in a loss to Southern Virginia University, 75-69. Kelsey Rector (State Road, NC), playing in her last game for Salem, scored 20 points and had 4 steals. Salem ends the season with a 7-18 record, while Southern Virginia improved to 12-14.
Tennis earns win in first match of the season
The Salem College tennis team defeated Greensboro College 6-3 in their first match of the season. The Spirits won 4 of the 6 singles matches and 2 of 3 doubles matches. Salem improves to 1-0, while Greensboro drops to 0-4.
Miller records the first ever triple-double in Salem basketball history
The Salem College basketball team traveled down the road to defeat Piedmont Baptist College, 82-58. Amber Miller (Mebane, NC) recorded the first ever triple-double in the history of the Salem program. She had 15 points, 14 rebounds, and 10 assists. Salem improves to 7-17 on the season.
Basketball loses GSAC regular season finale at Agnes Scott
The Salem College basketball team could not hang on in a close Great South Athletic Conference (GSAC) game today at Agnes Scott. The Spirits led by 2 with 5 minutes remaining before Agnes Scott pulled away for a 65-59 advantage. Salem falls to 6-17 overall and they finish GSAC regular season play with a 4-10 conference record. They will have to wait to see who wins the Spelman vs. Huntingdon game to see if they qualify for the 6th and final playoff spot.
Basketball comes up short at Spelman in conference game
The Salem College basketball team lost in an important road Great South Athletic Conference (GSAC) game to Spelman, 74-54. The two teams are now tied for the sixth and final playoff in the conference with one game left to play for each team. Shamaz Denerson (Atlanta, GA) had another standout performance with 24 points and 8 rebounds. Salem falls to 6-16 overall and 4-9 in the GSAC, and Spelman improves to 7-13 overall and 4-9 in the conference.
Basketball loses to Peace on the road in a non-conference game
The Salem College basketball team dropped a non-conference game at Peace College, 65-47. The Spirits were not able to complete the series sweep of Peace after defeating the Pacers earlier in the season at home. Shamaz Denerson (Atlanta, GA) led Salem with 22 points and 2 rebounds. Salem falls to 6-15 overall, and Peace improves to 8-13.
Salem SAAC donates worn shoes to Soles4Souls
The Salem College Student Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) just finished their collection of used shoes as part of the Great South Athletic Conference (GSAC) shoe drive. All of the SAAC programs from the member institutions in the GSAC collected shoes to support Soles4Souls. SAAC and SAAC President Tatum Justice were able to collect thirty-two pairs of shoes, which have been sent to the conference office in LaGrange, GA.
Coach Long hires Ken Hunt as softball assistant coach
The Salem College softball team has hired Ken Hunt as an assistant coach according to Head Coach Scott Long. Hunt comes to Salem after a successful coaching career at High Point Christian Academy (HPCA), where he was the head coach from 2005-2009. Hunt also has spent the past twenty-five years traveling the world with his adult softball teams.

Basketball drops conference game to speedy LaGrange
The Salem College basketball team lost a Great South Athletic Conference game against LaGrange, 117-75. Shamaz Denerson (Atlanta, GA) led Salem with 23 points. Salem falls to 6-14 overall and 4-8 in the conference, while LaGrange improves to 15-3 overall.
Basketball can't stay with fast paced Piedmont attack
The Salem College basketball team dropped a Great South Athletic Conference (GSAC) home game against Piedmont College, 92-49. Shamaz Denerson (Atlanta, GA) led the Spirits with 15 points. Salem falls to 6-13 overall and 4-7 in the GSAC, while Piedmont improves to 17-5 overall.
Kelsey Rector becomes first Salem basketball player with 1,000 career points
Kelsey Rector (State Road, NC) became the first Salem College basketball player to score 1,000 career points. The senior scored a three-pointer with 10:49 left in the first-half against Piedmont Baptist College to eclipse the 1,000 point mark. The Spirits won the game 87-66, and Rector finished with 12 points and 9 assists.
Salem cruises to home win against Piedmont Baptist
The Salem College basketball team cruised to an easy 87-66 win against crosstown rival Piedmont Baptist College. Amber Miller (Mebane, NC) had a career night with 25 points, 10 rebounds, 8 assists, and 3 steals. Salem improves to 6-10 overall, while Piedmont Baptist drops to 8-8.
Shamaz Denerson named GSAC Women's Basketball Player Of The Week for 2nd time
The Great South Athletic Conference has named Salem forward Shamaz Denerson the Player of the Week in women's basketball for the week ending January 23. The honor is the second for Denerson in 2010-11 and the third of the season for the Spirits basketball program.

The Salem College basketball team lost a Great South Athletic Conference (GSAC) game at home against Agnes Scott College, 66-60. Shamaz Denerson (Atlanta, GA) led Salem with 17 points and 9 rebounds. Salem drops to 5-9 and 4-5 in the GSAC, and Agnes Scott improves to 6-9 overall.
