<p><strong><img src="http://www.salem.edu/athletics/varsity/soccer/heatherhuffmanhighschool.JPG/image_preview" alt="heatherhuffmanhigh" class="image-right" title="heatherhuffmanhigh" />Lexington, NC-</strong><strong></strong>The Salem College soccer program is pleased to announce that Heather Huffman has committed and deposited 
to attend Salem next fall. Huffman, a defender, played soccer for Coach Greg Beal and Coach Mike Elder at North Davidson.</p>
<p>The Salem soccer team is coming off an 11-5-2 season, and their third
 straight trip to the Great South Athletic Conference semifinals in  
2011. The program currently has 3 straight 10 win seasons, and they have
 a 38-15-3 record over that span.</p>
<p>Huffman played 4 years of varsity soccer for the Knights. In her first 3 years, she was a 3-time Central Piedmont 4A All-Conference selection. She has also been the Knight's most valuable player, defensive player of the year, and freshmen of the year.</p>
<p>She played club soccer for Triad Elite and Coach Brad Franks this year, and she previously played for the North Davidson Sidekicks. Huffman was also the manager of the boy's soccer team. She is the daughter of Leigh Huffman and Mark Huffman.</p>

<p><strong><img src="http://www.salem.edu/athletics/varsity/track-and-field/victoriachafferstrack.png/image_preview" alt="victrack1" class="image-right" title="victrack1" />Deltona, FL-</strong>The Salem College track &amp; field and soccer programs are pleased to 
announce that Victoria Chaffers has committed and deposited 
to attend Salem next fall. Chaffers ran track for Christopher Madzik and 
played soccer for Randy Cutlip and Jay Lecruex at Pine Ridge High School in Florida.</p>
<p>The Salem track &amp; field team is coming off a season where they broke several school records. The soccer team is coming off an 11-5-2 season, and their third
 straight trip to the Great South Athletic Conference semifinals in  
2011.</p>
<p>Chaffers ran track for 1 year for the Panthers, and earned gold bars. She lettered in soccer for 4 years, and was selected as the teams best defender 3 times. She also played club soccer for the Deltona Youth Soccer Club for 7 years.</p>
She was a 4 year honor roll recipient, and she won the 4.0 Grade Point Average for 4 years. Chaffers was also a member of the National Honors Society and the Academic Team at Pine Ridge. She is the daughter of Dennis Chaffers.

<p><strong><img src="http://www.salem.edu/athletics/varsity/soccer/stephhighres.jpg/image_preview" alt="stephhubs" class="image-right" title="stephhubs" />Winston-Salem, NC-</strong>The Salem College Athletic Department celebrated the 2011-2012 athletic year last night in Bryant Hall. Director of Athletics, Melissa Barrett, presided over the festivities. Salem Academy and College President Dr. Susan Pauly and <span id=":1o4" dir="ltr">Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs and Dean of the College Susan Calovini were special guest speakers.</span></p>
<p><span id=":1o4" dir="ltr">Stephanie Hubbard (Sanford, NC) was honored as the Anne Woodward Student-Athlete of the Year for her performance on the soccer field. She also became the first ever student-athlete from Salem to be honored as an all-south region team member.</span></p>
<p><span id=":1o4" dir="ltr">Amy Allison (Geneva, OH) was honored with the Nann Tilley Service Award for her participation in tennis and soccer. Samantha Hubbard (Sanford, NC) was selected as the Jess Byrd Scholar-Athlete winner for her four years on the soccer field. Angela Reavis (Boonville, NC), a tennis player, earned the Scholar Athlete of the Year for having the highest grade point average of all Salem student-athletes. Allison, Samantha Hubbard, and Lauren Wisen (Madison, OH) were honored as four-year letter winners.</span></p>
<p><span id=":1o4" dir="ltr">All 7 teams honored 2 student-athletes with team awards. <p><strong><img src="http://www.salem.edu/athletics/varsity/softball/alliewatkinspitching.jpg/image_preview" alt="alliewatkinspitchihigh" class="image-right" title="alliewatkinspitchihigh" />Locust, NC-</strong>The Salem College softball program is pleased to announce that Allie Watkins has committed and deposited 
to attend Salem next fall. Watkins played softball for Coach Wesley Kidd
 at West Stanly High School in Locust, NC.</p>
The Salem softball team finished as the sixth seed in the Great South 
Athletic Conference (GSAC), in their first season of play in the NCAA. 
The Spirits were 7-9 in the GSAC and 13-22 overall, and picked up 2 wins in the Great South Tournament.
<p>Watkins, a pitcher and utility player, played 2 years of varsity and 2 years of junior varsity softball for the Colts. She helped lead the team to&nbsp; the Rocky River Conference Championship in 2011 and 2012. She was also selected as a 2011 Stanly News &amp; Press All-Conference Pitcher. Watkins is currently the captain of the softball team.</p>
<p>She also played varsity tennis and varsity basketball at West Stanly. Watkins played club softball for the CV Storm, Charlotte Blaze, Diamond Stars, and Queen City Rockers.</p>
<p>Watkins has been in the National Honors Society in 2011 and 2012, and she is a NC Scholar. She is also a member of the Interact Club, Medical Science Club, and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. She is the daughter of LaRhonda and Joe Watkins.</p>

to attend Salem next fall. Avsec, a central defender, played soccer for Coach Jennifer Hamilton and Coach Kalina Hobbs
 at Great Bridge High School in Virginia.</p>
<p>The Salem soccer team is coming off an 11-5-2 season, and their third
 straight trip to the Great South Athletic Conference semifinals in  
2011. The program currently has 3 straight 10 win seasons, and they have
 a 38-15-3 record over that span.</p>
<p>Avsec played 4 years of varsity soccer for Great Bridge, and she was the team captain her junior and senior seasons. She was an all-southeastern district player as a junior, and the Wildcats went to the regional championships after winning their district in 2010. Avsec played club soccer for 10 years, including for the Rush Swoosh and the Old Dominion Soccer Club Fusion for the past 2 years.</p>
<p>She won the Great Bridge Principal's Award and an academic scholar award.&nbsp; Avsec is also a member of Operation Smile, the Anchor Club, and she was the National Honors Society Treasurer at Great Bridge. She is the daughter of Gwen and Michael Avsec.</p>

<p>She has been a part of the Leadership Experience Opportunity, National Honors Society, and Book Club at Greenville High. Wierda is also a class speaker. She is the daughter of Kire and Shane Wierda.</p>

<p>Coach Jay Callahan has announced the 2012 Salem College soccer schedule. The Spirits will play 10 regular season matches at the Salem Soccer field, 2 at a neutral site, and 6 on the road.</p>
<p>Salem will play 10 Great South Athletic Conference matches. The Spirits finished as the third seed and lost in the semifinals of the 2011 Great South Tournament, 4-3, to the eventual champions, Piedmont College. The Spirits were 11-5-2 overall in 2011, and they were 5-2-1 in the GSAC.</p>
<p>The first regular season game is at home against North Carolina Wesleyan on the first of September. Salem's first road games are against Adrian from Michigan and Johnson and Wales from Rhode Island in the Capital University Classic in Columbus, OH.</p>

<p>The Salem College softball program is excited to announce that Rebekah Ballard has committed and deposited 
to attend Salem next fall. Ballard played softball for Coach Matt Beaman
 at Arendell Parrott High School in Kinston, NC.</p>
The Salem softball team finished as the sixth seed in the Great South 
Athletic Conference (GSAC), in their first season of play in the NCAA.

<p>Ballard, an infielder, was part of Arendell Parrott's 2011 NCISAA-2A State Championship team. She was selected to the all-conference and honorable mention all-area teams in 2011, and the Patriots were also their conference champions. Ballard also played club softball for the Hurricane Elite, Hurricane Select and Gold, and the EC Shockers. She played volleyball for 6 years and was a cheerleader in 2011.</p>
<p>She has been a member of the honor roll at Arendell Parrott. Ballard spent time working as an Amy Gardner Camp Softball Camp Instructor from 2008-2010. She won the 2008 Vaughan D. Fowler Award, and she is the daughter of Geraldine and Thomas Ballard, Jr.</p>

<p><strong>Winston-Salem, NC-</strong>The classes of 2012 and 2014 (Team Awesome) defeated the <img src="http://www.salem.edu/athletics/varsity/cross-country/powderpuffchamps2012.jpg/image_preview" alt="powderpuffchamps" class="image-right" title="powderpuffchamps" />classes of 2013 and 2015, 24-6, in the first ever Salem College Student Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) Powderpuff Game today at the Salem Soccer Field. The game was a fundraiser as part of the NCAA Division III initiative of raising money towards the Special Olympics.</p>
<p>SAAC was able to raise close to $100 to donate to the Forsyth County Special Olympics. Lisa Kiser, the Forsyth County Special Olympics Coordinator, was a special guest at the game. Student athletes from all 7 of the NCAA sports sponsored at Salem played in the game, as well as traditional non-athletes.</p>
<p>Mike Hollman, assistant soccer coach, was the head referee, and the event was coordinated by SAAC President Sabrina Thiel, SAAC Coordinator Sara McCormack, and SAAC Representative MacKenzie Schmidt. Jojo Hall was the captain of Team Awesome. The game was scoreless at halftime.</p>
<p>M&amp;M Engraving donated the trophy and The Juice Shop donated free smoothies to the champions.</p>

<p>The Spirits had several personal records in the meet including Verdi's school record. Carolyn Merkel (Greenville, C) had personal records in the long jump and the 200 meter run. Natali Olveda (Salinas, CA) had personal records in the 1500 meter run and the 5000 meter run.&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>Maryville, TN-</strong>The Salem College softball team split 2 Great South Tournament <img src="http://www.salem.edu/athletics/varsity/softball/scottcoaches.jpg/image_preview" alt="scottlongcoaching" class="image-right" title="scottlongcoaching" />games today. The Spirits defeated Agnes Scott 6-5 in a back and forth game. They lost to Maryville 3-0 in an elimination game that ended Salem's season. The Scots went on to defeat Piedmont to head to the championship against Huntingdon tomorrow. Salem finishes their season with a 13-22 overall record.</p>
<p>The No. 6 seeded Spirit sent the No. 4 seeded Scotties home with a 6-5 decision with a strong first inning.&nbsp; Salem put four runs on the scoreboard in their first at-bat, recording five hits and taking advantage of one Agnes Scott miscue.<br /><br />Salem extended their lead to 5-0 after leadoff hitter Shelby Drummond (Boone, NC) singled, stole second, and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Amber Bass (Clinton, NC) promptly sent Drummond home with a sacrifice fly.<br /><br />Agnes Scott would whittle away Salem’s lead over the next three innings scoring two runs in the second, a run in the third, and tied the game 5-5 in the fourth inning.</p>
<p>Salem scored their game-winning run in the fifth when Kayla Kennedy (Goldsboro, NC) singled, was sacrificed to second, and was driven in by a Kristi Morton (Trussville, AL) single to right center field.<br /><br />Julia Blattner suffered the loss on the mound with five innings of five hit relief. Abby Settles (Reidsville, NC) earned her second tournament victory with a complete game effort scattering 11 hits.</p>
<p>In the Maryville game, back to back RBI’s by Leah Kelley and Hannah Youngdeer gave Maryville a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning.&nbsp; Brittany Henry led off the third inning with a triple and scored on a Taylor Dockery ground out to finish Maryville' scoring. Henry scattered four hits with three strikeouts to earn her second mound victory of the day. Salem finished their season with a pair of wins in the GSAC tournament.</p>

The Spirits pulled off an upset in their first game, when they defeated Maryville 4-2. Salem dropped a 5-inning game to Piedmont, 10-1, in the second game. Their overall record is now 12-21 and they will take on Agnes Scott tomorrow in an elimination game at 11:00 am.</p>
<p>The sixth seeded Salem College Spirits kept Maryville College’s bats at bay, limiting the Scots to only four hits. Salem’s Abby Settles (Reidsville, NC) ensured the Spirit’s first ever GSAC tournament victory surrendering only a pair of unearned runs to Maryville in their final inning.<br /><br />Salem posted runs in each of their first three offensive innings.Kristi Morton (Trussville, AL) stroked a sacrifice fly to score leadoff hitter Shelby Drummond (Boone, NC) in the first.The Spirits added two runs on four hits in the third inning to pad their lead at 4-0.&nbsp; Settles tallied Salem’s key game winning RBI on a single to left field. Maryville waited until their last at-bat to light their side of the scoreboard.</p>
<p>In the second game, Salem challenged the second seeded Piedmont College. Piedmont starting pitcher Brittany Head allowed only four Salem hits in her complete game victory. The Lions pounded out nine hits and took advantage of three Spirit errors to post the run-rule victory.</p>

<p><strong>Decatur, GA-</strong>The Salem College softball team had 8 players earn end of the <img src="http://www.salem.edu/athletics/varsity/softball/amberhomer.jpg/image_preview" alt="amberhomers" class="image-right" title="amberhomers" />year honors by the Great South Athletic Conference (GSAC). The Spirits had 3 players earn GSAC All-Conference honors and 3 earn GSAC All-Freshmen honors, while 2 more earned all-academic honors. The Spirits are set to play in the conference tournament starting tomorrow at Maryville.</p>
<p>Amber Bass (Clinton, NC) was the only player for the Spirits to earn both all-conference and all-freshman team honors as a utility player. Ellie Vizcaino (Wake Forest, NC) was selected to the all-conference as an outfielder and the all-academic team. Kristi Morton (Trussville, AL) rounded out the Spirits all-conference winners as an infielder.</p>
<p>Kayla Kennedy (Goldsboro, NC) and Abby Settles (Reidsville, NC) earned all-freshman honors. Emily Devane (Lillington, NC) rounded out the all-academic winners for having above a 3.25 cumulative grade point average. The Spirits also voted on Breanna Griffin (Millers Creek, NC) as being their individual sportsmanship winner.</p>

<p>April 21, 2012</p>
<p><strong>Wilmington, NC-</strong>The Salem College soccer team had a successful spring tournament at <img src="http://www.salem.edu/athletics/varsity/soccer/Spring2012113.JPG/image_preview" alt="uncwsoccer" class="image-right" title="uncwsoccer" />the University of North Carolina at Wilmington Seahawk 7 vs. 7 Classic. The Spirits finished in second in their group and lost in the quarterfinals of the tournament, which consisted of all NCAA Division I and Division II schools besides Salem.</p>
<p>The Spirits defeated Barton and Mount Olive and fell to UNC-Pembroke in group play. They lost to Mount Olive in the quarterfinals. Bethany Kent (Manassas, VA), Sabrina Thiel (Hillsboro, OH), Stephanie Hubbard (Sanford, NC), Courtney Hedgecock (2;San Diego, CA) and Sawyer Ferguson (Billings, MT) all scored. Jessi Carter (Tampa, FL) had a strong day in net.</p>
<p>Thanks to the generosity of Salem alumni:Kelly Laham, Liz Perritt, Laura Shearin Walsh, and Val Froneberger; the Spirits stayed the weekend and had a great meal at a beach house at Carolina Beach.</p>
