“In high school I struggled and had no belief in my abilities whatsoever. At the beginning of my sophomore year of college I transferred to Salem from another women’s college with little hope that this experience would be any different. By second semester I had decided to run for student government!
My confidence grew because Salem invested in me. The faculty and staff were always honest with me about my potential and progress and always excited about what interested me…My junior year I…called the mayor of Winston-Salem seeking a January Term internship and was accepted. The experience was incredible. Not only did I do important, relevant work recognizing unsung civil rights heros, but I also returned later to complete a Domestic Violence Prevention Project.
At Salem I learned I do not need to be intimidated by others’ status, credentials or words. I realized that my experience is needed at the table and that my voice matters. I now work for the NC Metropolitan Mayors Coalition. Last year my work focused on developing a comprehensive strategy to obtain passage of gang legislation in the NC General Assembly.”
