Students may minor in coaching beginning in the fall of 2010.

Courses in the minor will include the sociology of sport; philosophy and fundamentals of coaching competitive sports; care and prevention of athletic injuries; and an internship in coaching.

Kim Fierke, director of athletics at Salem, believes that the coaching minor will help fill a void in women’s leadership roles in intercollegiate athletics. “Prior to the passage of Title IX in 1972, more than 90 percent of all coaches and athletic directors of women’s programs were female,” she said. “Today that number falls to 42.6 percent of coaches, and even lower numbers for athletic directors, trainers and sports information directors. We see our new minor as preparing women to inspire and teach students through the world of sport.”
