Tatum Justice, Michala Michaux and Julie Piernikowski were honored with the highest awards in the Salem Athletic Department during the department’s recent end-of-the-year celebration.

Justice was recognized as the Anne Woodward Student-Athlete of the Year. This award is presented to the Salem College athlete who has achieved team and individual greatness during the 2009-2010 year. The person is nominated by coaches and voted on by the athletic department staff.

Justice (Jacksonville, NC) was a Great South First Team All-Conference Soccer Team selection. She played the first 12 games of the season as a central defender and helped the soccer team hold their opponents to less than one goal in those games. She was switched to center forward for the last eight games, and scored six goals including three game winners in that stretch. She had a major impact upon the team’s successful 12-7-1 season.

Michaux (Morganton, NC) was given the Jess-Byrd Scholar Athlete Award. This award is presented to a graduating senior who for four years has attained a strong academic record and exhibited qualities of sportsmanship, athletic ability and leadership. The award is named in honor of Jess Byrd ’27, a distinguished Leham Professor of English (1937-1967) and a strong advocate for the academic advancement of women.

Michaux has been a two-year soccer captain, and she was also a two-year basketball captain. She started every match in her four years on the soccer team. Michaux holds many records on the basketball team including most assists in a game and most steals in a season. She is the only athlete in Salem College history to compete for four years on three separate teams: tennis, basketball, and soccer.

Piernikowski (Potomac, MD) was selected as the Scholar Athlete of the Year. This award is presented to a student-athlete letter winner that is a sophomore, junior, or senior and has the best cumulative grade point average.

Piernikowski was the number one overall runner for the cross country team for the majority of the year, and also was selected to the Great South All-Conference team. This is the second year in a row that Piernikowski has been honored with this award. She helped lead the cross country team to a second-place finish in the GSAC XC Championships.

Krishauna Hines-Gaither received the annual Pfohl Faculty Award at the Honors Convocation held May 12 at Salem College.

She earned an associate’s degree from Forsyth Tech and then entered Salem College holding a scholarship given to a student who demonstrated academic excellence in the area of foreign language. Graduating from Salem in 2002 after earning the President’s Prize in Spanish, she went on to earn a master’s degree from Wake Forest and did further language study at Middlebury College.

She has already been honored in numerous ways by the institutions she attended, receiving the 2007 Distinguished Alumna Award from Forsyth Tech and the 2007 Salem College Excellence in Teaching award, and being elected by the class of 2008 to deliver their baccalaureate address.

An extraordinary teacher, she shares her love of the Spanish language with Salem students through teaching classes such as level 2 Spanish, the Culture and Civilization of Spain and Cuba through Film and Language. As coordinator of French/Spanish teacher education, she teaches second-language instructional methods and mentors student teachers.

Hines-Gaither is active outside the classroom, of course, having served as chair of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages, the board of Directors of Forsyth Tech and as a co-founder of AAL, or African-American Linguists, a national association promoting second languages among the African-American community. For the past six years she has served as a translator at the United States Marine Corps’ recruitment station in Winston-Salem, and she has had papers published and presented her work on topics ranging from teaching diverse learners, to the celebration of the African diaspora through film.

She is an ardent supporter of student events, either as a cheerleader from the sidelines, serving as a mentor to a club or narrating onstage during the Salem Step Show. According to Ann McElaney-Johnson, dean of the college and vice president for academic and student affairs, "Hines-Gaither's absolute commitment to her students and to this community are visible across the many roles she plays. Her presence here on campus truly makes Salem a better place to teach, to learn and to work. "
