Strategic Plan 2013-2017

Approved by the Board of Trustees of Salem Academy and College on May 3, 2013

While being receptive to new opportunities, Salem College will focus on these goals:

Academic Excellence, Competitiveness and Reputation

  • Highlight and enrich our liberal arts and sciences mission through scholarly events that involve the wider community
  • Launch competitive new programs, undergraduate and graduate, to augment our liberal arts and sciences core and foster growth
  • Increase undergraduate research and other experiential learning opportunities for students
  • Offer international and cross-cultural experiences to prepare students for a rapidly changing global society
  • Expand academic support programs to assist student transition to and success in college, improve retention, and develop each student’s unique potential
  • Increase opportunities for the professional development and mentoring of faculty
  • Elevate our reputation for providing an outstanding and distinctive education that prepares graduates for success in a changing world

A Vibrant and Engaging Co-Curricular Environment

  • Implement women’s professional development and leadership initiatives that prepare graduates to succeed in a changing world
  • Create an Office of Intercultural Affairs that fosters the development of multicultural citizens and offers programs that support and sustain a diverse student body
  • Expand the visibility, impact, and presence of the Wellness Program
  • Launch dynamic social, educational and cultural activities as the state-of-the-art student center opens.
  • Continue the development of a strong NCAA Division III program for student athletes

Enhanced and Expanded Campus Facilities

  • Develop a new Campus Master Plan that respects the unique history and architecture of the College, provides for growth and facility improvement, and mindful of sustainability and accessibility
  • Continue efforts to acquire additional property and increase the campus footprint
  • Explore new options for student housing and classrooms
  • Support and implement emerging technologies to enhance the campus environment

Continuing Growth in Financial Strength

  • Optimize fundraising strategies to increase the endowment and contributions to the annual fund
  • Focus on systematic improvements in faculty and staff compensation
  • Develop a plan for incremental, qualitative growth among the traditional residential, traditional off-campus, Fleer Center and graduate students while maintaining small class sizes and a low student-to-faculty ratio
  • Provide additional merit and need-based scholarships for academically qualified students
